Area rug cleaning

A rug isn't flooring, it's a textile — and the machine that's right for wall-to-wall carpet is the wrong tool for a wool area rug. We treat them differently because they are different.

We fibre-test before anything wet touches it

Wool browns out if you get the pH wrong, and dyes on older pieces can bleed into the foundation. Both are permanent. The test takes two minutes and it's the difference between a clean rug and a ruined one.

Low moisture, not saturation

Soaking a wool rug shrinks it and can rot the cotton foundation from the inside. We use a controlled low-moisture method and dry it flat, which is slower and costs us more time. It's also the only way it survives.

Fringe by hand

Machine-cleaning fringe tangles and greys it. Ours gets done by hand, every time, and it's included rather than billed as an extra.

Cleaned in place

Most rugs we can do in your home. If a rug has heavy pet damage or unstable dyes, we'll tell you before we start and point you to a specialist rather than risk it.

Questions

Rug cleaning, answered straight

Can you clean a wool rug in place?

Usually, yes, with a low-moisture method and the fringe detailed by hand. For severe pet contamination or unstable dyes, in-place cleaning is a real risk and we'll say so before we start.

How much does rug cleaning cost?

$2.50 a square foot for synthetic, from $3.50 for wool. A 8x10 runs roughly $200 synthetic or $280 wool. Fringe detailing is included.

Will the colours run?

Not if it's tested first. We check for dye stability on an inconspicuous corner before any moisture goes on the rug. If the dyes are unstable we won't wet-clean it — we'll say so.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Flat-dried, usually 24 to 48 hours depending on pile depth and humidity. Beach-city homes take longer.
